What is T9 text input?
T9 (Text on 9 keys) was a predictive text technology used on mobile phones from the late 1990s through the 2000s. Each digit key (2–9) represented three or four letters. Instead of pressing a key multiple times to cycle to the desired letter, T9 predicted the intended word from the numeric sequence.
How does T9 encoding work?
Each letter maps to the number key it shared on a classic phone keypad: ABC=2, DEF=3, GHI=4, JKL=5, MNO=6, PQRS=7, TUV=8, WXYZ=9. Spaces become 0. The word "hello" encodes to 43556.
Can I decode T9 numbers back to text?
Yes. Enter a T9 numeric sequence (e.g., 4663) and click "Decode T9." The tool converts each digit back to the most likely letter based on standard T9 mappings. Note that some sequences are ambiguous — "4663" could be "good" or "home."
