How to Use the Upside Down Text Generator

Start typing or paste text into the box and the flipped version appears below as you type, with no button to press. Click Copy result to take it with you, then paste it into a message, a bio or a post. Clear empties both boxes.

A Worked Example

Hello world! → ¡plɹoʍ ollǝH

Two things happen at once: every character is swapped for a Unicode look-alike that resembles it rotated 180 degrees, and the order of the characters is reversed. Both are needed. Without the reversal, the flipped letters would read left to right but appear to hang upside down in the wrong order. Notice also that the exclamation mark became ¡ and moved to the front, just as a rotated page would show it.

Which Characters Are Supported

  • All lowercase letters a–z and all uppercase letters A–Z, using the closest Unicode look-alikes available. A few capitals use symbols rather than true letters, for example A becomes ∀.
  • The digits 0–9.
  • The punctuation marks . ? ! ( ) [ ]
  • Anything else, including accented letters such as é and most other punctuation, passes through unchanged and is not flipped.

Using Flipped Text Wisely

  • It is made of real Unicode characters, so it can be pasted into most apps, but how it looks depends on the font in the place you paste it. Occasionally a character shows up as an empty box.
  • It is hard to read for people and software. Screen readers may read the characters as unrelated symbols, and search engines will not match flipped words. Do not use it for names, addresses, links or anything someone needs to understand quickly.
  • Keep it short. A few words in a username, caption or joke work well. A whole paragraph is tiring to read.

If you would rather simply mirror the order of your text without changing any letters, use the Text Reverser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does upside down text work?
The tool maps each standard letter to a Unicode character that visually resembles it rotated 180 degrees. For example, "a" maps to "ɐ", "b" maps to "q", "p" maps to "d". The resulting string can be pasted anywhere that supports Unicode text.
Can I paste upside down text on social media?
Usually. Because the upside down characters are standard Unicode, they can be pasted into most social platforms and messaging apps. How they look depends on the fonts used on the viewer's device, and a few characters may appear as empty boxes.
Does flipped text work for all letters?
Most common Latin letters have reasonable upside-down Unicode equivalents. Some less common characters may not have exact visual matches and will display as their closest approximation.
Can I combine upside down text with the text reverser?
Yes — and that is actually the classic effect. Flip your text with this tool, then reverse it with the Text Reverser to get text that reads right-to-left when rotated upside down, as if the reader is looking at the page from the other end.
Why do some characters not flip?
The tool flips letters, digits and the punctuation marks . ? ! ( ) [ ]. Accented letters and other symbols are not covered and are passed through unchanged.
Why does my flipped text show empty boxes in some apps?
Flipped text uses special Unicode characters, and some fonts do not include all of them. If you see empty boxes, try pasting into a different app or switching the font.
