Three Reversal Modes

Characters: "Hello World" → dlroW olleH
Words: "Hello World" → World Hello
Lines: Reverses the order of all lines in your text block

Use Cases

  • Mirror text — create text that requires a mirror to read, used in design and art.
  • Log reversal — flip chronological logs to see most recent events first.
  • Puzzle creation — generate reverse-reading challenges for escape rooms and games.
  • Palindrome testing — reverse a word and compare to the original to check if it is a palindrome.

How to Use the Text Reverser

Paste or type your text, then choose a mode: Reverse Characters, Reverse Words or Reverse Lines. The result appears below, ready to copy. The three buttons all work from your original input, so you can try each one in turn.

The Three Modes, with Examples

Reverse Characters: Hello brave world → dlrow evarb olleH
Reverse Words: one two  three → three  two one
Reverse Lines: 1, 2, 3 (on separate lines) → 3, 2, 1

Reverse Characters mirrors the whole text. If it contains several lines, the lines also come out in reverse order, with each line's characters reversed too. Reverse Words reorders the words but keeps each word spelled normally, and it preserves the spacing between them. Reverse Lines flips the order of the lines and leaves the text inside each line untouched.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Punctuation counts as part of a word in Reverse Words mode, so "Hello, world." becomes "world. Hello,". The full stop moves with the word it was attached to.
  • Emoji and other symbols are reversed as whole characters, but letters with separate combining accents can end up with the accent on the wrong letter. For plain text this is not a problem.
  • Reversal is not encryption. It is trivial to undo, so use it for puzzles and fun rather than for anything private.

Practical Uses

  • Newest-first logs. Reverse Lines turns a chronological log, list of steps or chat transcript upside down in one click.
  • Palindrome checks. Reverse the characters of a phrase and compare. Remove spaces and punctuation first with the Whitespace Cleaner if you want a fair test.
  • Puzzles and games. Reversed text is a classic way to hide a clue. Pair it with the Upside Down Text tool for a double twist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between reversing characters vs. reversing words?
"Character reverse" reverses every individual character in your text (e.g., "Hello World" → "dlroW olleH"). "Word reverse" keeps each word intact but reverses their order (e.g., "Hello World" → "World Hello"). Choose based on whether you want to mirror the text or just reorder its words.
Can I reverse text to create a secret message?
Yes. Character reversal creates a simple mirror cipher that can be used for puzzles, games, or novelty messages. To make it more readable, combine with the Upside Down Text tool to flip the reversed text — requiring both rotation and reversal to decode.
What does reversing lines do?
Line reversal flips the order of your lines — the last line becomes the first, the second-to-last becomes second, and so on. This is useful for reversing the chronological order of logs, emails, or lists.
Is reversed text used in any real-world applications?
Yes. Mirror text appears in ambulance livery (so drivers see it correctly in their rearview mirrors), in certain graphic design techniques, in CAPTCHA generation, and in technical encoding puzzles and CTF challenges.
Does Reverse Words reverse the letters inside each word?
No. It only reorders the words and keeps each word spelled normally. To mirror the letters as well, use Reverse Characters.
Is the spacing between words preserved?
Yes. In Reverse Words mode, the gaps between words, including double spaces and line breaks, are kept as they are while the words swap positions.
